Sounds like something to be avoided - at least by me.  And a little illustration there of typical corporate patent skulduggery.

Evergreening is now prohibited in most western countries, except of course the USA.  It was voted down in Congress several times.  Big Pharma want to keep it going

I've always had a liking for Dolby and their customer relations.
I'm an genuine Dolby Licence holder: some time ago I wrote to them asking about buying small quantities of Dolby processing ICs, which were only available to licence holders. They granted me a royalty-free licence to build equipment using their technologies on condition that such is only for my own personal use, and never to be sold or used for profit!
