@gavinbirss: My understanding is that Schiit's Multibit is R2R...

@vleisman: From what I've read, the Modi Multibit is a bit improvement over the Modi 2 Ultra... but it's detail, separation, and tone is 'entry level' when compared to the other R2R DAC's... an indepth comparison between the Modi Multibit, Denafrips Ares, Soekris ApS dac1101, on some very detail IEM's would be great

Is there anywhere you know of that did a side-by-side comparison?  I have found that, if the reviewer knows what he is doing, these kind of reviews offer better information than a one-off review

Since seeing a Metrum dac on this forum some years ago, I've been intrigued by the idea of a R2R dac.

If the Denafripps cuts the sonic mustard, I'd be keen to try one out.

I would also love to read a reputable blind comparison between a Modi Multibit and any other highly rated DAC.

Wolvebain,
Agree, it is made up of a precision R2R ladder but it needs I/V, unlike Soekris for example and it can not be described as a discrete circuit.

Planning to order 4 units of the ARES DAC from Vinshine Audio.  The CIF value per unit works out to R8100 at yesterday's rate.  Not known is clearance/VAT upon arrival, I'd say allow 20%, but an itemised statement will be provided

Apart from one reader who has expressed interest, would anyone else like one?  You would pay upon delivery of the unit to me in Cape Town and then specify your delivery options

OK, so probably a stupid question but that's why I'm asking...
If I were to use my Oppo 105D as a source, is there a way to connect and still get full DSD quality playback.
I have some (legally) downloaded DSDs (2.8MHz) that I play off a drive connected to the Oppo.

If complete operation/quality is possible it may be a nice upgrade to the Oppo DAC.
I must add that I am still impressed with the quality coming out of the Oppo via CD, SACD and Hi-Res rips (44.1 - 16bit) and higher res downloads.

I don't really know if the digital out from the Oppo would resolve DSD.  Certainly a computer would, no problem at all.  Using software like JRiver or VLC, you will hear DSD reproduction.

You would have to read the specs of the digital out of the Oppo, and if that did not enlighten you, ask them

Maybe someone here can answer it.  I know that my SONY universal player, that plays SACDs, will only output a 44.1, 16 bit signal from the digital out, but the Oppo is more advanced and newer

Hi

I RTFM'd and found the following limitations (of the Oppo):
Due to copyright restrictions, SACD audio cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical
digital audio output. To listen to SACDs, please use the HDMI or analog audio connections.

and
Coaxial/Optical Audio: up to 2ch/192kHz PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS.
so I'm guessing no SACDs nor downloaded 2.8MHz DSDs...

@chris,

Hope you have seen the DAC-R2R-REF (DAC/headpone amplifier), which is soekris based? Not sure about pricing...

I just noticed that Vinshine have increased the shipping on the Ares to $85.

Now we just have to keep an eye on the ZAR/USD exchange rate.

I was keen of a set of SoundTech MC15 Bookshelf Speaker's. The online shop notes FedeX shipping for $ 150 and a leadtime of 1 week.

They however can only be shipped with Singapore post which may take up to 1 month to arrive due to their weight and parcel size.

Will most likely be handed to SAPO/EMS?
