to UHD or not to UHD
« on: March 17, 2017, 09:11:09 AM »
Hi Everyone

So im in the market for a new TV. Budget R8 000, and it will be for the lounge.

Now i i am stuck with the following options

Large Size but last years model and FHD
or
Small but UHD

So which in your opinions (and why) should i go for?

these are my options:

LARGE SIZE
49 inch FHD LG model- LG 49LH510  Price-R6500
55 inch FHD LG model- 55LH595  Price-R7000

UHD
49 inch UHD LG model- 49UH603V Price-R8000
43 inch UHD Samsung 42KU7000 Price-R7000 (this years model, slim and modern but ony 42 inch)

So being that we are limited to 4K media's availability and the fact that the blue rays are still R500 plus, and that the torrents are all bigegr than 10GB and with our poor internet, should i for now just make the most of FHD and enjoy a 49 or 55 inch FHD screen, or just get the more expensive 49inch LG FHD or the 42inch UHD?

All thoughts welcome  :)

The KU is last year's model, this year's model is the MU. Honestly I wouldn't recommend an LG unless you have family members that will be seated off angle from the TV.

If you can't afford a larger Samsung now, I would suggest you save for a while longer until you can. The MU series is due to arrive soon (it's available in stores in Europe from the 23rd) so it's reasonable to expect KU prices to drop  further.

The KS range is also good as far as I can tell

I was looking at the UA60KS8000
| Lounge System | Samsung UA55F8000 | Onkyo TX-RZ1100 | Tannoy XT 8F | Tannoy XT C | Intel NUC |
| Braai System | Samsung UA40J5300 | Sansui AU-222 | Intel NUC | Paradigm Mini Monitor V2 |

Hijacking ... sorry OP :

But does Netflix stream UHD in South Africa?

I've always maintained that should get fibre installed and it was possible to stream UHD, I'd look at a UHD screen.

You also need to upgrade to a Premium subscription to get Ultra HD content.

I would go UHD, you need to be future proof. In the next 2 years a lot is going to change regarding UHD content. With increased availability the prices of UHD blu rays will drop. You will look back and think why did I only get a FHD.

Netflix streams 4K Uhd and HDR, so does Amazon Prime. I watch it with a 20mb/s fire line, uncapped. Average data usage per month is about 600 gb.

For my own piece of mind, I would like to point out that HDR and Ultra HD are not two separate things. Ultra HD is HDR by default, what we refer to as HDR is simply the new colour gamut, PQ-EOTF and bit depth of the Ultra HD standard.
