So, my insurance replacement choices....
« on: February 23, 2017, 03:12:45 PM »
So my Sony STR DN1040 was zapped by lightning in December (along with the ATV 3, PS4 and aircon unit). The insurance has given me the choice of the following AVRís as replacement:

HARMAN KARDON AVR-1710S
DENON AVR-X2200

From reading the What HiFi revises, it is obvious the Denon is the way to go but I want your opinion.

I could also take an 8 grand payout. If I do this, then I will sell my Monitor Audio setup and downgrade to a 5.1 Bose Soundtouch 520 system which would far better suite my current lounge.

The Denon X2200 is pretty good.

If choice is between a AVR or R8k, choose the AVR

As was mine, the previous December. Unit switches on for a few seconds then goes into protection mode. It appears the CPU is fubar.

I would possibly be interested in buying your STR 1040 if the insurance agrees - please keep me in mind. Perhaps I might get one going out of the two units.

Your replacement should possibly be the Denon, always a good choice!

I will ask my broker about the Sony unit - she did mention that a salvage company would be arranging a pick up for the damaged units.

I am leaning towards taking the Denon.

Yep, they were supposed to collect my damaged goods too, but never pitched. After 15 months it is unlikely that they ever will ;)

Definitely denon. You may get lucky as well not sure where they will source x2200 from as distributors (homemation) have moved to next model x2300. Did I mentioned definitely denon???

Just tell them it's still with the place that assessed the damage - you'll go collect it next week and they can come back to fetch it

95% chance they won't come fetch.

An AVR with a fubar CPU still has a good transformer, power supply caps, heatsinks, output transistors, etc. A good starting point for a DIY power amp. Even the enclosure can be recycled if you put new front and rear panels on it.  :rubhands:

Very briefly: a few months down the line and I am very happy with the Denon. It is much better than the Sony.

I have also realized that my speakers are too big for my lounge and I will be getting smaller speakers but that's a different thread.
