DT880 impedance - 600 or 250 Ohms?
« on: February 20, 2017, 02:33:30 PM »
I am about to purchase a the DT880 headset on ebay.

It's just a question of which impedance I want as there are three variations (32 Ohm, 250 Ohm and 600 Ohm respectively). My gut tells me the higher, the better. I know it implies the inconvenience of needing an amp but I've resigned myself to it.

So, as far as availability goes, it seems that the 250 Ohm version is a lot more accessible (and incidentally cheaper) than the 600 Ohm version. Also, there's one in black - my preferred colour.

So my real question is, given that I'm using a headphone amp, will 250 Ohms be any real compromise over choosing the 600 Ohm version? It's very imperative that I know because if there is a difference, I won't compromise. I'll get the 600 Ohm version and pay the extra money.

Howzit!

I have the dt880 pro 250 ohm cans paired with a millet hybrid valve amp(medium gain valves) and they sound fantastic to me.
(then again the hd800 is just 10 times better!!)

Haven't had the chance to listen to the 600 ohm ones but I would think they are better.

I would suggest getting a valve headphone amp for these as they compliment the headphones sound.

But thats just me.

to be honest, if you are willing to spend the money, get the 600 ohm cans!!!

I had a 250 ohm DT880. I also have a 600 ohm T1. I think both will be fine, you wont be able to hear much of a difference between the 250 and 600 ohm versions. I would suggest that you save a bit more money and get the T1. The difference is huge.

I drive my DT880 250 ohms with conventional outputs, they're not that hard to drive but they do benefit.

If you're getting a dedicated amp I would second the 600ohm option but practically excludes any mobile devices.  I had the DT990 600 ohm and regret selling them ...

Okay. Done and done :-) 600 Ohm version of DT880 has been placed on order. Accompanying which, is the Meridian Explorer 2. Have my eye on the Bravo Ocean valve amp.

I would assume you are looking at DT880E not pro.  Very little to choose sound wise between 250 & 600 Ohm.  I have to ask why you are going to the trouble of buying on ebay?  Is the price super good?  Bear in mind you will have no local warranty plus the risk of going missing in transit unless shipped by courier.

In some of the small low voltage hybrid amps the tube does very little to the sound, it only adds a little tube distortion. The amplification is done by opamps.

600ohms will need a large voltage swing so if OPA2604 with +-24V it should work nicely otherwise I suggest to look around for other options.

Yes, I have chosen the DT880E version.

I find that getting it locally is a lot of trouble too. I don't know of a single store where I can walk in and purchase it off the shelf. Then I find the online stores (local) that have it, but not in the version I want. After post-purchase research, I found that I could have bought a pair locally for only a few hundred rand more - but again, not in the version I want. Some of the local online retailers advertise it but they don't have it in stock; some charge over 1000 rand more than what I can get it on ebay. I have been fortunate enough that every item I've ever ordered on ebay has arrived, but I understand the risk of it going missing in transit and I certainly hope that doesn't ever come to pass. As for needing to actually use the warranty, well, it's not impossible, but it is improbable. All in all, I find ebay a less-nonsense approach, but I concede with you in that there are risks. Ebay does have a money back guarantee, should your item not arrive and I hope never to use it, lest they become like Amazon and just refuse to ship to SA.

Too late now to change your mind, I hope they give you years of pleasure.  C-Plan Audio usually have stock.  Current retail of DT880E & 990E in SA is R4,170 incl. VAT, most dealers will do about R3,500.  If no one has stock delivery is usually 2 weeks.  Ebay prices vary but about R2.5K before VAT and transport seems about average so about the same price as buying locally.  Note that DT880 Pro is much more costly at R5,395, no idea why as there is no real difference other than colour and a higher clamping force headband.

Note that black E versions are no longer available.  Also there is no such thing as DT880 Premium, as far as I am aware there never was.
