My Stuff
« on: February 04, 2017, 07:17:41 PM »
Oh dear! This promises to be as quiet as a North Korean Christian Forum.

So my photos of some of my machines:

studer a80 007 by jdza, on Flickr

studers 004 by jdza, on Flickr

Number one machine. Mark Levinson ML 5 master recorder.Second photo shows ML electronics. Offboard psu not shown. Massive effort by Garth Moore.

DSCN5323 by jdza, on Flickr

Number two: Studer A80 Reproducer. No recording facilities. Record head replaced by additional 1/4 track replay head with doubled up reproduction electronics. Flux Magnetic Extended Response Heads. All technical work by Garth Moore.

DSCN5327 by jdza, on Flickr

Number three: Studer A 810 with heads relapped by JRF magnetics. Uptdated firmware and CPU by Ki Choi.Salvaged on several occasions(including an onboard fire!) by Garth Moore. A Swiss Army Knife in recorders>

DSCN5324 by jdza, on Flickr

Foreground. Number 4:  Ampex 440C. From Tom on this forum. Formerly SABC then broadcaster Les Franklin. Some tech played Mr Franklin a horrible trick by wiring the heads out of phase so that one channel would cancel the other leaving vocals totally erased on playback. Rebuilt capstan motor and tweaked for optimum sound quality. Wonderful phat sounding classic Ampex.

Number five: Studer A67. Fitted with Nortronics pro heads and offboard Bottlehead tube repro audio electronics, Rebuilt in East London by a retired SABC tech. A real honey of a machine.

Revox Pr99. Not shown. Studer B62, Revov A77,B77Mk2, Telefunkem M5 9(a  beast!) ,Ampex 350 etc.

A wonderful collection.  Would love to see and hear it.  Whereabouts in SA do you live?

Hi Chris

From photographic evidence he lives in the mouth of a horn loaded sub.

Fortunately no Korean audio products shown!

We have the same taste in paraphenalia. All too lovely!!!
I do declare you have nicer "cabinetwork" than my machinery.

Not to be contrary, but that would be Les Franken. :teach:
I have some mono JH110 machines made by MCI, also from Les's home facility. The plan is to make two monos into one stereo, if a stereo head block ever appears at an affordable price.
(The set square is not part of the machine, just to show how enormous they are! I shall taunt you a second time, ipod nano owners.)

The Dok Viljoen ceased working last week! It will not stay powered up. No serious fault I think, probably a dead logic gate or bypass cap.

Lovely, man!

I think I know why. The internet has all the answers:

Ahh Shonver. Now I  feel more sympathetic to that nameless Tech. It was a simple act of self preservation.

Pleading Saturday red winitis and in the interest of factual accuracy,it was one of the output xlr plugs wired incorrectly. This became obvious on calibration when the announcements on a mono MRL calibration track disappeared on playback and despite optical alignment the test tones were 180 degress out of phase between the channels  i.e cancelling all centre content so poor Mr Franken (thanks Steerpike) got his voice down on the tape but never realised how bad a singer he was on playback.

Steerpike;

I have a high quality (Nagra rival) FUBAR Sony  portable RtR here. As MCI later became Sony I always wondered if the Sony heads would work in the MCIs. You are welcome to that machine if you want it.Thank you Flickr person for use of your pictures

Same here, Andre! My dad owned a small R2R and he had a few tapes in holders. It just struck me this morning that, apart form some 7-singles, this had been his music collection. But it was not audiophile standard and most of the music was done (legally, back then) from the Blaupunkt radiogram via a 5-pin DIN cable.

For those who think reel-to-reel is only 'vintage', this is going to be available soon, new off the production line:
Estimated price €25,000

Revox / Horch House are still promising their new R2R out this year too, cheaper at an estimated $5000, but it's a playback-only machine for now.

Neither of these is "overpriced", relatively. Studers and Otaris and the like cost much the same in their time.

I've only heard them once as a source in a really good hi-fi setup, but spent many hours with Studers in Capital Radio studios, recording, splicing etc.
Apart from recording my own stuff I had to archive/ consolidate all the Capital jingles etc.
Sadly the reels, which I kept when Capital closed, did not fare well in Durban's humidity.
Great when they are working those old Studers.

My friend from those days- one of the technicians- has an unloved assortment at home gathering dust, as well as an EMT tt from his SABC days.
