All done! Nice shiny new Nichicon PM Series caps, low ESR, high reliability and operating temp caps for the small ones and Nippon power caps.

Old and new:

New one's slightly taller and have higher temp tolerance which is nice. Nearly had a big bang though, I made the ARSEumption that they both had positive on the same side... Luckily I double checked! Great fun getting the clamps out, is a rats nest in there and they used non-metric nuts which was just wonderful...

Capacitor graveyard:

Yip, that's it, a grand total of 11 electrolytics in the amplifier section... Interestingly(probably not), 2 of those aren't even on the schematic or parts list. And worryingly were different caps, a 1uF and a 10uF in mine. Had to get hold of the main man John to get the correct values.

For anyone out there who googled this, C631 a&b are originally 10uF 16V. C632 a&b are NOT used.

There's another couple in the LED VU meter, however they're axial and I ordered radial, not a train smash so just left the originals in.

Bias still 100's with the new caps, left it at 10mA as it's working fine. Re-calibrated the VU meter as well.

How does it sound? Exactly the same, don't be daft.

And that's all she wrote! Hopefully another 30 years of service out the thing!

Only one logical conclusion: there's no difference between the old and new caps

Less likely to explode... Old ones also would have drifted, amp is as new now ;) also higher temp tolerance and longer life ones in now, probably never need changing!

There probably is differences, seems to be more control and clarity. But confirmation bias is a biatch so didn't want to claim it.

Relax and trust your ears. You don't really need it in writing from some self appointed authority that you are allowed to hear the difference, do you?

Very nice looking amp and I'm glad that all turned out good.

Only one logical conclusion: there's no difference between the old and new caps

No. That is not the only logical conclusion. That is the null hypothesis.

The null hypothesis is: There's no difference between the old and new caps.
In research the null hypothesis often is the best place to start. Subsequent data then used to either prove or disprove the null hypothesis.

I suspect, that you prefer we start using the "alternative hypothesis".
Namely: There is a difference between the old and new caps.

Explanatory power vs predictive power. Both have their merits, but either way, we remain with only a hypothesis and still require data to reach a conclusion.

Relax and trust your ears. You don't really need it in writing from some self appointed authority that you are allowed to hear the difference, do you?

Relax, agreed. ॐ

I have yet to encounter a self appointed authority on the matter. Simply some that have read the research, and discuss accordingly, and some that haven't.

Trust your ears. Agreed, with caveats. There is a depth to the stance too frequently unexplored.

Trust your ears - in an unbiased listening test - yes, most of the times (though even here there are examples where your ear cannot be trusted to give an accurate portrayal of physical phenomena occurring outside the self - think psychoacoustics tricks).

Trust your ears - in a biased listening test - in matters as these, where belief exists, no, because you are not relying on only your ears.

If you really believe in the statement "trust your ears", then use them, without the crutches of pre-knowledge and your eyes. "DBT" should be the mantra of the "trust your ears" stance.

Biased subjectivist, unbiased subjectivist and objectivist. We need to understand all three and understand what each has to offer us.

The problem enters when people deduce conclusions from biased subjectivism that it is not capable of corroborating and would be better left to unbiased subjectivism or objectivism, and preferably a combination of the two (even more preferably, in a truly satisfying study, a combination of the three :2thumbs:).

Given what we know of illusions and the fallibility of human sensory perception, just as seeing should not always conclude in believing, so hearing should not always conclude in believing.

Your photo does not do it justice though. Its such a good looking amp.

PS. its a 600.
edit: I also put feet on from an old Technics amp (with gold trim). Looks good!

^^ Now you can do a comparison.
