Fostex 600
« on: September 19, 2016, 08:40:46 AM »
So I managed to grab the one posted in the heads up thread ;)

It's in decent knick and has never been fiddled with, just a bit dusty and over 30 years old... Definitely going to re-cap it, the 18000 uF 100V power caps are going to be fun  :headbanger:

Anyone got experience with these things, what should I look out for?

First job is a thorough cleaning though, also need to replace some corroded heat sinks and see if the power transistors are done with paste or pads.

I think you're about 6th in the queue ;) but it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Thanx I will def get hold of him, google Fostex 600 and his name comes up everywhere!

Just got the heatsinks off, yuck, corroded to hell, glad I hadn't powered up, they weren't sinking anything. But on the other hand 30 year old caps with not a single leaking, bulging or caved in one, someone good designed this and a grand total of 11 electrolytics in the thing.

EDIT: Lesson 1, don't get your fingers under the exterior heat-sinks when you put it down.

Many people used these in professional applications. A friend's father used 2 of these to power speakers in a cinema - a real Bioscope not the little kiosks in shopping malls. They used quite a few monstrous boxes not sure what they were in the front of the place.

Have you amped them up yet?  When some come up in Durban I'll finally get my hands on a pair. (and not tell anyone before they are mine)

......just so that we are all aware...these amps are not plain sailing if parts are required! Before strip down some essential testing and firing up needs to be attempted to avoid a hornets nest....just saying.

Establishing (safely of course)if it works or not FIRST....is somewhat critical.
