Chinese grocery store Somerset West/Strand
« on: May 26, 2019, 01:48:38 PM »
Does anyone know of such a store? I don't want Chinese takeaways, but they sell the best Soy sauce I have yet encountered. The locally produced sauces one finds in supermarkets are not in the same league. The also have wasabi peanuts like I have found nowhere else - certainly not the Montague product.

Got wasabi peanuts and decent Soy sauce from Foodies.  There is a branch in Diep River and I believe in the Parow area.  Inexpensive too

A-Mart has a nice variety and their service is excellent. They've got some real nice ramen noodles as well, not the local :cr@p:

Thanks Chris and zerO. That link is especially promising. One wants the stuff with Chinese writing, for those are imported from China. Kikkoman's soy sauce is delicious.
The one I am familiar with through my son and his Chinese wife is in Monte Vista, oposite N1 City - Mun Fong Chinese Supermarket - but that is too far. I am afraid Diep River and Parow is also a bit too far.

Found it kamikazi, thanks. Less than 10 km from my home.

Some years ago, a Chinese friend I was studying with took me to a local Chinese restaurant and ordered an off-the-menu authentic Chinese meal. I was a hot pot with a variety of peripheral options (for the hot pot), plus some duck. It was fantastic! Nothing like the stuff you get over the counter. The hot pot was divided into two sections, with one being spicy (chillies). Tastes were more subtle - almost bland - and spice was very spicy! One of the highlights was the peanut source. I went back to find the restaurant, which was based in a house, a few years later but could not find it.

The exact product I was looking for, yes.

Restaurant was in Durbanville? Off the main road, if its the same place I am thinking of. Unfortunately closed.

It was in the area bound by De la Haye, Old Oak, Old Paarl and the N1. That was probably around 9 years ago.
