Music server, is it time to move on.

Our music servers have the shortest life span of any of our other components ( some of us have amps and speakers from the ?70s, I have). But with new operating systems, progress in hard drives, more demanding music platforms, advances in the development of DACs etc, is it not time to move on. What about laptops and tablets? Cheaper but how effective are they.
