Soekris dam1021 rev 3 (2%) R2R ladder DAC
« on: March 15, 2016, 08:02:16 AM »
Planning to go dual balanced, already received 2 boards last week Friday.
Firmware is now at V 1.06 : http://www.soekris.dk/download.html
 :2thumbs:

Will use non-isolated 500 Mips XMOS board (less power hungry that 16 core/2000 MIPS version), as inputs are on dam1021 are isolated.

Optical input (192K) can be added for $4 (DIYINHK)

Just need to plan how to split appropriate signals. Each board will be configured via serial console to be bal-left/right and balanced output will be obtained from RAW ouput bypassing the opamp/buffers.

There are some switch/input boards available from fellow DIYers at DIYaudio...
Affraid mine will be a plankie until I get help to case it...

Even with 1 board the signal to noise ratio is only 3db better from the buffered balanced outputs and some prefer the RAW unbalanced/unbuffered outputs.

I'm planning to do a similar set-up, and would like to get your feedback on your experience..

Biggest differences between my envisioned set-up and yours are the USB to I2S module and power...

Update?

I got a big case, a instrument case that looks a bit 1950 ish.

Getting some Cork to attempt to make it a little prettier.

Going to transformer for power with low noise regulators and may not use brass connectors like echo's end.

Going to need professional help with the back panel where the input and output connectors are. Any volunteers?

Wolvebain,
What i2s are you planning on? Powersupply?

Rev 3 boards or Rev 4?
Rev 4 is using a second choice of output buffers as the ideal choice is now end of life and scarce.

Not an issue when going balanced and getting output from RAW outputs. No I/V and no output caps.

Yepp.. planning to get the Rev 4 boards.

I'm planning to get an OEM Amanero Combo384 usb to I2S module... but decouple the bus power, and run it of a separate power supply ... will run the power-on led and display components from that as well.
As for the Soekris boards, want to get use a separate DC power supply for each one...

Will prob start with running it of a test bench power supply whilst building and tweaking, or get some linear regulated power supplies from eBay DIY sellers.
But ultimately, want to DIY get a regulated linear power supply kit and pair it with an 'audio grade'  toroidal transformer [similar to this: http://sklep.toroidy.pl/en_US/p/TTSAS0020-SUPREME-AUDIO-grade-transformer-TSAS20VA-voltage-to-50V/373 ]

I'll prob build my own box.. my 3D printer has a build volume of 280 x 250 x 200, so just need to keep the each side within that range.
I have some wood filament, but I prefer a more matt/brushed finish.

Just pull the trigger and purchased the 2x Soekris dam1021 Rev.4 boards...
Also, decided to try them out with a Supreme Transformers TS10VA PRI:230V SEC:2x 7V toroidal transformer first.. test bench power supply would be a bit of a bother for listening tests at my PC.
Just popped twistedpearaudio.com an email for stock ETA on the Hermes-Amanero and Cronus re-clocking module combo...

Other than the display module that I'm investigating, I'll purchase the other items this weekend [16mm Vandal Resistant Switch, pair of Neutrik NC3MBH-B Gold Plated 3-Way PCB Mount XLR Male Connectors]

If phase1 sounds epic, then I'll go the separate regulated linear power supply route.

Nice mock up

I am going with this transformer, has nice mounting PCB
Got 7.5V / 7.5V if I go with +-9V regulators but 9V / 9V and 12V / 12V 50VA are on the way...

If you need some mounting components, etc. 3D printed, let me know...

What will you be using for the display ?

I want a display that shows me if the DAC is playing PCM or DSD, as well as sample rates and what filters are in use...
I had hoped you had some filtered suggestion, as I figured since you have the optical-input as well, you'd want a display and input selector interface..

So I'm still undecided on the display interface... will prob resolve later if/when the set-up proves to sound awesome.
I spent some time with sketch-up, playing around with a more retro look, instead of a newer/digital one -- Seeing that I only use USB digital input, also popped in some elements of an analogue input selector [from phono-stage, transport, etc. to balanced XLR oot to the head.amp]

Here's the retro mock-up: https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/embed.html?mid=45f42d5d-1184-40fd-ac11-9262d02758cb
