When I started selling HiFi in a specialist shop, more than 20 years ago, it was the done thing. Cable came from the reel and we fit banana plugs for the customer.
In the better shops we soldered these.
Then came the van Den Hul Revelation and a revolution. Complex beasts.
I used to take those home and prepare them overnight. Big 80cm crimp tool to put the lugs on. The cable consists of a thick inner core with about a dozen individually insulated multi strand bundles around it.
From there I guess I never stopped. Bought more tools. Honed the techniques.
I can build, repair and change. I have also figured ways to re-use connectors where possible.
I am however cautious. If I don't know what I will find inside the jacket I am not the kind of cavalier chap who says no problem, but I will be happy to try anything that can be researched before cutting the heat shrink.
Here are some builds and changes.
