I already donate regularly to SPCA, Animal Welfare and the NSRI.  There are always charities that need your help.  Something for the abandoned children in the camps at Calais is more in my current line of thinking.  I asked Home Affairs about the possibility of settling children here in SA.  They referred me to Adoption.org who in turn sent me back to Home Affairs.  Then I was referred to http://www.gov.za/services/adopt-child/apply-national-adoption.  Their attitude is that the child must already be a South African citizen, so that denies any of the refugee children in France

It may be a noble idea, but considering the amount of homeless children already in South Africa, I fully understand the stance taken by the government.
