Yes Timber I also tend to think the Peerles mid with the sealed back merits serious investigation (available from Madisound). Non-sealed units require a lot more work.

Indeed the woofer looks like a wideband Seas 10", but this needs confirmation - maybe you could have a peek at those from your neighbour and compare....that unit was often used up to 2k with a 1,5" Seas dome. It was rather wel behaved and had a smooth natural roll-off at 2k, therefore it was often used without a low pass XO filter.

If a WG added to the TDFC makes the latter useful down to about 1K or so, a 2-way is a distinct possibility.

The crossover for most of those 2" domes was usually around 700 - 800 Hz as you estimated. So stretching to just above 1k may be possible.
