If anybody in Joburg wants to try some terrific local-local craft beers, give Agars a try. They've got eight different brews, including the Warrior IIPA at 7.2% (!), and each is superb. I'm an enormous fan of their brews. The brewery is located in Kya Sands and I don't believe their beers are sold in retail stores anywhere other than Gauteng. But if you're based in northern Joburg (Randburg, Sandton, Roodepoort, Fourways, etc.), they've got two open days at their brewery coming up month-end.

Jozi Blonde incoming. Thanks for this heads up.

I tasted a good couple of Gilroy's when up in Jozi once. Now that was nice beer!

Darling Bonecrusher is a favourite of mine as well

Re-reading this thread I came across the above.  I used to drink so much of this and really enjoyed it, over time one of two things happened.  Either my palate has changed or their recipe has changed over the years.  I had one last year and found its citirus notes and sourness really overpowering.

Granted, my daily (not really a daily as my waist line no longer tolerates beer on a daily basis) is now the Devil Peak King's Blockhouse IPA.  Which is a very different flavour profile, and from a wine drinking perspective (my primary drinking habit) my palate is quite developed and stable.

(Yes, yes, I know that Devil's Peak doesn't really seem to hit the spot for the true hipster these days)   :giggle:

Re-igniting this thread to say something short and sweet which is especially relevant today with the booze ban having been lifted last night:

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CRAFT BREWERS! They need all the help they can get right now.

Indeed, thanks for the reminder.

Also don't forget the OG micro-brewers from before the word "craft" even entered the lexicon. My particular favourites are Mitchell's (erstwhile from Knysna but I think they have moved), and Gilroy's from Muldersdrift.

Decided to try online orders from Best Craft Beer.  Quick, simple (did a manual EFT but they have the usual payment options) and next day delivery (well, next but one as they wait for the money to clear).  Good range of countrywide craft beers available and a monthly mixed pack too.  I went for two from Kennel (Trail Dog and Oklahoma something or other) and Frontier Karma Citra.  24 cans chilling in the fridge whilst I chill at Unity with the latest offering from That Brewing Co. ‘Laidback Luke’ a kveik yeast pale ale (doesn’t say the hops).

Next up will be a happy hour APA or three!

Can't believe I just found this thread.

I've been hunting for a good IPA for some time. Any suggestions?

Some I've tried recently:
Jucy Lucy NEIPA - best of the local bunch for me so far.
Lagunitas - tried once.
Hey Joe - not toooo bad, but...still looking
Mad Giant - tried once.
Devil's Peak Grapefruit - also not too bad, but...

The one's I miss from the golden age of 'craft' beer in Cape Town:
Rogue Dead Guy Ale - perhaps not IPA, but damn...
Rogue Seven Hop IPA
Brewers and Union All day
Brew Dog Punk

There's Devil's Peak's King's Blockhouse IPA (so not the grapefruit one). Darling also makes the Rogue Pony PA.

I was going to check if Mitchell's makes an IPA but their site is, hilariously, blocked on my work network.

The range of Karoo craft breweries beers are amazing. You can not decide on a clear favourite, they are all good. Their Weiss beer is something special as well as the American pale ale. The IPA has a proper kick and their lager is the best thing to have on a hot day.

Haha, I suppose the liquor page on Makro is also blocked...

Thanks for the suggestions.

Haven’t tried any of Karoo’s offerings as yet. I do love a good Weiss.
