Share ADSL over wifi in Linux
« on: October 30, 2015, 03:33:27 PM »
Hi there

I am using Linux Mint 17.2 and think I am going to stick with Mint for a while. I have everything I need but just cannot get the wifi up and running.
I just bought a j5create usb wifi adapter and went through so many forums  to get the things up ( I am using a USFF desktop) and Aztech router from Telkom.
I have added a wifi connection from the network manager. Created the SSID. WPA and password saved. iwconfig shows that its using wlan0.
Problem is, it wont allow any android device to receive data, although it connects.
I know Linux uses ad hoc and infrastructure modes. I tweaked the file in "etc" to mode=AP instead of infrastructure. Still nothing  :sd:

I am fairly new to Linux and clearly my network knowledge needs to be upped.

Is there anyone out there to share knowledge? Its more for the  :angrywife:

Thanks in advance

i am not understanding what you are trying to do
you say it connects ,
but wont allow android device to receive data . Why do you wanna share internet from desktop ?
routers are cheap and by the dozens

Thanks scrarfussi, I basically need a wireless Access Point. The reason I mentioned the PC and usb adapter is because the PC I bought is USFF with no wireless adapter.
When I create the new connection via Network manager, all the android phones in the house connects but there is no data incoming.
Should the ADSL connection and the wifi connection be bridged somehow?

I have since installed hostapd to manage the AP. When I activate, it cannot start dnsmasq. The struggle continues...

OK, so....I think you are trying something I have never tried before. I must admit, it's a bit out of my range....Interesting, though. So, may I ramble through a few questions, until you get contact from someone who actually knows what is happening?

Is my understanding of the setup correct?

Your Aztech ADSL router does ADSL and wired networking (presumably ethx ethernet) but not wifi.

Your PC is connected to the Aztech using eth0? eth1? and Internet stuff like avforums works.

Your PC has a J5create usb wireless adapter plugged in to a usb port, recognised as wlan0.
You have (on the PC) added a wifi connection from the network manager. Created the SSID. WPA and password saved. iwconfig shows that its using wlan0.

Result: "Problem is, it wont allow any android device to receive data, although it connects."

I guess you are right, some sort of AP wikkeling is needed. To help those who can't resist, can we please know:

Which J5create usb wireless adapter? Maybe a link? Does the hardware maker actually claim that it can do the deed?

Which Mint 17.2 DE? Cinnamon, Mate, KDE, XFCE If none is mentioned, it's probably Cinnamon, I suppose.

When you are in this situation "it wont allow any android device to receive data, although it connects.", is your PC wired to the router? Can the PC ping, e.g. Google or avforums? Can the pc ping the droids? I'm not sure if you can test if the droids can ping the pc. I wonder if your wired and wireless interfaces have to be active at the same time.

Do you get anything like the "Use as Hotspot" button mentioned in this post from 2012? OK, that was probably Ubuntu 12.04 or so, but it looks like it would be a really nice feature. I imagine if you had it, we would not be here?

Hi entropyagent

No problem, thanks for taking the time

Yes, the Aztech router is used via ethernet for ADSL, but it has wifi. Model is 700WR-3G
Yes again, connected via eth0 so nothing wrong with ADSL connection.
Yes again, I bought the J5create as the PC doesnt have a wireless adapter http://raru.co.za/electronics/3133617-j5-create-wireless-n300-300mbps-dual-band-usb-adapter
Yes, I created the connection and yes, iwconfig shows wlan0.

Link to the device above. Its a Wireless N300

I am using Linux Mint 17.2 with Cinnamon yes

Ping to internet is fine as I am typing this through ADSL connection.

No, unfortunately Mint's Network Manager doesnt have that :'( It shows Wifi hotspot is on, but hostapd cant start dnsmasq.
Think the IP range is the issue now.

ok this is what i am not understanding
WHY do you want to use the PC as a access point ??
if you want it to connect wirelessly thats a different  issue .
lets address that issue

have you installed    wpa_supplicant

if you think its a ip issue . type ifconfig  as root .

something i am battling to understand . Are your other wireless devices connecting to the internet via the router wirelessly ?
if not then its possible something is wrong with  your router setup

Sorry scrarfussi, I am using the word "PC" loosely. The router is of course doing the work

Something is not right with that ip address
Can you  check your router setup
Dhcp

Your eth0
Addr is 10.0.0.3

So wireless address should be on the same range.

Are your wireless devices connecting to the network?

Install an app called fing from play store
Scan your network
