Why are they called 7XX not the model name? Impedance is 62 ohms so can they be driven by portable devices, cellphones etc?

Because AKG decided to manufacture a model specifically for Massdrop. Seems to be closer to the AKG 712 as far as I understand it. The AKG 701 was a difficult can to drive, not sure about the 7XX, but I'm sure it should be okay out of a laptop, don't know about volume limited smartphones. Should be a terrific headphone to power with a $200 DAC/amp like the Geek out or iFi Audio iDSD nano or even the Dragonfly.

In my experience even cans with low resistance like Grado SR80i benefit from proper amplification. You get better balanced sound, definitely fuller or more warm sounding. Straight out of a laptop it'll probably sound thin even if you can get loud sound levels.

Some new notable Massdrop specials:
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/sennheiser-zy-cable <- ZY 8ft  cable replacement for HD580/600/650 Sennheisers coming in at $63 with shipping seems like a no brainer for a stock cable replacement.
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/beyerdynamic-custom-one-pro <- Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro for $163 including shipping is a bargain compared to the R3000+ retail here.

Headphone stands:

Some guy in KZN building them, not the nice classy wood finish but its an alternative if you don't want to spend R1k+ for a headphone stand.

I just put my STAX SRS-2170 earspeaker and amp in the for sale section.
Someone was trying to tell me that CDs are better than vinyl because they don't have any surface noise. I said, "Listen mate, LIFE has surface noise" - John Peel

Various models of Skullcandy Aviators, R899, cant vouch for the retailer though. My ears tell me they sound miles better than say Sennheiser HD-202 / HD-205 which you can easily listen to at your nearest Dion Wired. I don't mind listening to these over HD-595's.

Mine have served me well, no reliability problems as yet, listen to them in bed, then they get packed in my laptop bag for work listening and occasionally lent to work colleagues.

Haven't seen these posted yet. Superlux OEM. Massive bang for buck. Worth 4 times their price.
