Which woofer for 3-way: 10 or 12 inch?
« on: December 08, 2009, 09:14:34 AM »
As usual, I'm way ahead in my planning when it comes to speaker building (the building usually lags quite a bit).

I have a ribbon tweeter and Zaph Audio ZA14W08 5" midrange. Looks like crossover will be 300Hz and 3kHz. What 10" or 12" driver will be clean up to 300Hz? I'm looking at an F3 of around 30~35Hz, bass reflex.

It is definitely an old school speaker. I don't want to use a small bass driver.

PE has a Dayton R270 10" Alu cone and Usher 10" doped paper. The RS270 needs a big box and I think the Usher will beat it i.t.o distortion. They usually have very low disto down low. Madisound has an SB Acoustics 12" paper cone as in Zaph's latest design. I have not checked sensitivities.

Alternatively, two 8" from the Peerles Nomex range. Equivalent in area to 12", but better to deal with floor reflection and cheaper than any decent 12". Sensitivities won't match unless you are going active.....

Thanks, Hennie.

I was looking at SB Acoustics' drivers. I'm now just collecting the respective driver data, and then going to do a comparison. For a while there, I daydreamed of the Acoustic Elegance woofers, but I don't think that it will be feasible just yet. Yes, I realise that I'd have to go active.

Just for completeness' sake, these two sub drivers also have low distortion up to 300Hz:

Seas L26:

10" Aura on sale at Solen, but only 3 in stock:

I personally would have loved the 12" version of this, it's on sale too but only 1 in stock.

I also think an Alu woofer would match nicely with the Zaph mid.
