16/44 etc confused!?
« on: May 25, 2014, 09:21:18 PM »
As far as I know, music from iTunes is 16/44.1
Would it help to change settings on midi and or Audirvana to upscale to 24/96.
Please try to explain how this works.

ITunes is 256kbps, arrived at by 'lossy' compression.

Effectively, they need to reduce the file size for storage (clients' iDevices) and for smaller download sizes from their data warehouses to clients at a higher speed. So, instead of using mp3 which does this, they use their own compression formulae, which also loses data bits compared to CD (16/44), but in such a way that the effect on the music is not noticed by most and accepted by the rest purely for the convenience of the Apple life support system.

To give you an idea of 256kbps, when ripping a cd to apple lossless (the file size is reduced compared to CDs 16/44, but without losing any data bits), the resulting file is 850 to 950kbps. Theoretically this lossless file would sound the identical to a CD as all the original sound information is still contained.

I doubt that up scaling would improve the sound quality as those lost bits are just not there, so all the up scaling software could do would be to guess the missing bits by averaging two sequential samples and then inserting this newly calculated average in between them, thus upping the number of bits....but they are not the originally recorded bits.

Does Audirvana not by default also play FLAC files?
Why not rip to flac?

PS How do you find the integration of Audirvana with iTunes in general?
i had the trial version and want to look at getting a license.

Itunes the music server software can run up to 16/48

With Audirvana afaik you can overcome this limit to play files stored with higher bit and sample rates like 24/96

Upsampling lower sample rate material will not bring back resolution lost in case of compressed formats.
Some dacs may sound better with material in 16/44 upsampled by computer and others sound  worse.

The main reason for the add on software is to be able to play high res files above 16/48 an to create a lower jitter play platform for 16/44.

The itunes store sells music in compressed format.

Buy discs or full res downloads elsewhere. ITunes compressed files will not give you the best possible sound for your money, no matter what you do to them afterwards with software or DACs.

You can not polish it back to full res.

I need more help here - have some hi res flac music from HD tracks and loaded this on my ipod touch.I know it cannot play it natively, but have an app called audiophile that can. When I play these files via the Audiolab IQ dock to the Mdac,it says 16/44.1 although some of these files are 24/96 and higher.WTF?

Yes, but you would still need a plug in of sorts for flac if you use iTunes.

Computer audiophile forum is a great resource but both ricketysmurf and drifter can probably help too.
