The 9th October meeting will start with a short presentation and explanation of the way compressed music achieves smaller file sizes, plus any drawbacks

We may have been competing with the Japanese Rugby World Cup today as, up to 10h00 there were noticeably less visitors.  It picked up a bit later on, but overall, turnover both with visitors and sales were down

We have some interesting top end evaluation components arriving at tomorrow's meeting courtesy of Hein and e-Piphany to show and demonstrate this evening, depending on how the meeting progresses

There is a set of B&W 606 speakers, a NAD Master Streaming amp, speaker stands and specialised speaker cable.

The B&W 606 are the larger 2-way standmount speakers and delivers refined sound.   It has B&W's Continuum™ cone technology, the 606 creates a pure and precise soundscape.  Developed over an eight-year period and first featured on their flagship 800 Series Diamond models, the Continuum cone has been integrated into the sixth generation of the critically acclaimed 606.

Our meeting direction will take

Evaluate digital recordings.  A short presentation will describe music file compression.  Then we will listen to the music, the audience has score-sheets to record their impressions.  We may repeat short portions if there is uncertainty to the results

Then we have this terrifically powerful Class D amplifier that has been sent to Allan Abrahams for us to do a short evaluation to report back to the builder in Jhb.  Again, some score sheets will be provided

We will also see what we can do with the NAD amp in the time available

The equipment line up is:

MacBook
NuPrime uDSD DAC
NAD M10 streaming amp
B&W 606 speakers on their own stands, with complementary speaker cable
The 600 wpc Class D amplifier

As a standby, the club's Marantz Class A amplifier

Refreshments served as usual

Anyone in Cape Town is most welcome to come along this evening and participate in the meeting

It starts at 7.30 and we'll have to be fairly sharp since there is a bit to go through

The address is 10 Muir Road, Rondebosch

Directions from our newsletter...

Rosmead Avenue from Wynberg

At the intersection of Avenue de Mist and Belvedere Road, turn left.  Second right into Malcolm Road.  Muir Road is right at the end.  Turn left again and park.  The house is on the right.

Coming on the M5

Take the M43 Kromboom Road exit and turn right.
At the traffic lights at the top, turn right into Milner Road.
First left into Mayfield and second right into Muir.
The house is 200m on the right

I was stunned by the Pathos (Classic Remix?) and B&W 606 speakers combo last night.  Incredible finesse and musicality.

Had it not been for this demo I would never have discovered this gem ! "Air, you certainly know how to hide the brand".    :cleansound:

The NAD M10 streamer stood it ground very well and was a joy to use.

I am certain had it not been for time constraints-and the fact that some of us still need to work, the meeting would have lasted much longer.

Many thanks to Alleycat for exposing us to his toys and e-Piphany who without hesitation provided  R70K+ worth of equipment for the evening.  Much appreciated !

A well-attended meeting and all participated in the events

We were able to demonstrate the NAD streamer with the BluOS app and show what it is capable of.   This amp was used for all of the demonstration of digital music and was easily able, along with the B&W 606 speakers, to provide sufficient detail to allow the audience to differentiate between 24-bit 96KHz recordings and various flavours of MP3 and OGG

The 600 watt amp performed well, but the impression that it was too clinical and provided too much detail.  One could hear there was amazing headroom.  The Pathos amp definitely outshone it and proved a very good match to the B&W 606 speakers

Some members asked for a copy of the graphs used in the presentation about sound.   The file can be downloaded from this link - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iscnZVWpi5z06PRTAwXXfTX4gALBvrFN/view?usp=sharing

Our thanks to our host, Andrew for providing his living space to the meeting

Also thanks once again to Hein at e-Piphany for the loan of the NAD M10, the B&W 606 speakers and matching stands and dedicated bi-wire speaker cables

Thanks to Chris and the HIFI club committee for organizing an interesting evening and thanks to Andrew for hosting.

The 'six' x format comparison was very difficult and I agree that perhaps it needed more time to then evaluate several A/B type comparisons. A more revealing/capable speaker would have made it easier.

The poweramp on demo in the second session of the evening, needed far superior speakers to properly evaluate it's capabilities, of which only glimpses were revealed. The amp is rated at 600 w/ch, therefore to do justice to the amp it needs to be evaluated in a 'known' system that is more capable of handling that power. The amp is staying in CT for a while so we may find more opportunities to give it a whirl.

My compliments to Ryan Hill for his effort and bravery for exposing it to the rigorous scrutiny of the Hi Fi club Boys.

At Ramsey's again on Saturday, we experienced the accuracy and detail of the Australian-made AXIS loudspeakers.

Thanks Mr Audiotweak

We also had a braai and were able to swop in and out from the listening room to the stoep for a lengthy chat.  The house looks over the valley to Noordhoek and in the distance, you can see ships that have rounded the Cape on their way to Europe
