I want to seriously agree with all the comments posted. Nice to meet up with friends and also put some faces to forum names :)
The technical accomplishment of what went down on the day cannot be underestimated and it surely is a SA first if not universally so.
The hardware setup performed admirably and I cannot imagine the time and effort that went into the prep side , apart from all the box construction .
Presentation was first class and the tolerant and friendly demeanor, of all,  suited the day perfectly ............
Really, really well done
As someone who dabbles a bit in loudspeaker building, it is special to have been in a position to have listened to all  the various combos in one session.

First we must thank Jozua and Jason for the lengthy preparation to make this event a success.  Many hours of cutting MDF, gluing and clamping it together, routing out the holes with precision and inserting the drivers.

Then Jason measured each driver in turn and prepared a computer program to adjust the driver for its relative level and response and the crossover frequency

Each driver, when connected into circuit, was supplied with the above parameters from Jason's computer wirelessly to the Raspberry pi that controlled the signal.  The music was selected by Jason's phone and again transmitted wirelessly to the Pi

The meeting started off with an explanation of how the system was configured, the physical layout.  Each set of tweeters and mid-woofers were run through a short selection of music and the audience were asked to score each unit, comparing these to the reference system, which is a Wharfedale bookshelf unit and its associated sub-woofer

We stopped for tea when the power went off and started Jason's Honda inverter which supplied electricity for the rest of the day

We also need to thank Andrew Hooper for sharing his amazing house and stunning living room to host our meeting.

The amplifier, Pi and DAC

The results after the scoresheets were captured

An example of one of the drivers used

After the scoresheets were discussed, Jason presented his conclusions.   You may get a copy of this by clicking on this link - https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1ZpxaYpkWfaD-LqSvOsIgpObjyva9vJMmh9kPRaUfsMI/

Wow, is that a 19th century bread oven in the yard? I was already impressed by the brick walls and the fireplace, blackened bricks in the lounge.

The house was built in 1923 by the then owner of Leith Roofing.  He was on holiday in France and saw this house design that he fancied.  He got a local architect to draw up something similar and built it.   It is a stunning house and thankfully, apart from the kitchen, is entirely original, so has not been spoiled by a modern addition

The owner is Dr Andrew Hooper and he is a long-term member of the Hi-Fi Club from the 1980s.  When we started to use the house for meetings, we found the electrics to be decidedly dodgy.  I have a reasonable electrician friend and he sorted it out so it is 100% reliable

After depending on your ears to evaluate speakers in March, its time for an Ear-Refresher course, and here is a wonderful example of music from three famous classical composers

This will be a symphony concert in the newly refurbished Cape Town City Hall, on Thursday 4th April at 8.00pm

We intend to get the cheaper seats in what is called "Platform Seats" which is behind the orchestra.   You are in fact quite close to the musicians and are seated in front of the organ

The seats are R135,00 each (as opposed to R350,00 for regular seats)

The Platform has limited capacity, so we need to know by tomorrow, Saturday 23rd March at 12h00 if you would like to join us, so we can make a block booking thereafter.  You can pay on the day, we will confirm

Please will you reply to this email address - capetownhificlub@gmail.com

Thank you

On a fresh autumn evening, a select few of us attended a Symphony Concert in the City Hall in Cape Town

On the bill was the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Bernhard Gueller and the visiting pianist Alvaro Siviero

Works played were:  Beethoven's Prometheus Overture, Bach Piano Concerto in D minor 1 and Brahms Symphony no 1 in C minor.  All extremely familiar compositions and most excellently presented by the musicians

This is what the CTSO has to say about the event:  "The CPO’s Principal Guest Conductor and Conductor Laureate of Symphony Nova Scotia Bernhard Gueller is a favourite with audiences, is lauded for the passion he brings to the podium and carefully prepared and always musically rewarding performances"

One of Brazil’s leading pianists,  Alvaro Siviero is a widely acclaimed soloist and chamber musician across the world. He has been praised for the ‘full sound, intense romanticism and great communication with the audience”, demonstrating “ elegant lyricism and flawless technique”.

We noticed that there were 4 microphones above the stage to allow FMR to do a live broadcast of the event.   The entire City Hall was full to the brim, not one empty seat

Below the pictures of the attendees, are samples of the music that the Hi-Fi Club has stored on its server.  I can recommend the "Brubeck meets Bach" as being very similar to the rendition we heard last night

And the music.....

Thanks for the report back on what must have been a wonderful evening of music the way it should be heard.
Nice to see you guys lowering the average age as well...  :point:
It concerns me that I notice very few young people in attendance.

Another successful Vinyl Faire, today 5th May.  A brilliant Cape autumn day, started at 12 deg at 8.00am and warmed up to 20 deg by lunch time.  No wind at all

16 dealers
350 people through the doors
Many dealers were very pleased at the sales and the good vibe of the occasion.  Plenty of easily available and accessible free parking helps a lot as well

New attractions this time

A record cleaning machine, at R20 a pop
A kitchen with a large variety of food at rock bottom prices (last picture)
Johan selling record cleaning fluid, Linn Sondek oil, inner record sleeves

We are pleased to note that despite there being more and more vinyl fairs in Cape Town (at least one a week now) the popularity of this one remains very good and our advertising bears fruit

The club benefits financially as well
