Today's Vinyl Faire - 27th November

Thanks to the catering staff, the chair movers, the dealers who came along.  A blistering hot day (31 deg in the shade) made the beers go fast, luckily we had bought extra.   We heard that someone "only" made R3k for the day.  Times are tight

Thanks Dean, enjoyed it so much too! Especially when the beer became a projectile when Andre went on about the lamb/black sheep reference, OMG, still have the giggles!  :ROFLMAO:

That centre speaker is going to need some warm sounding fronts to balance the system - thanks Chris

Re: Meeting on 9th February

A well-attended meeting last night and most things went to plan.  The Marantz PM94 amplifier which was to have been presented it still awaiting some components for replacement by Rick Smuts, who has very kindly undertaken to restore it to its former glory

So we had:

Source - MacBook with a selection of hi-res music played via a Metrum HEX DAC
Amp 1 - The club's new TDA7294 amplifier.  All considered this to provide a sweet and musical sound, if perhaps a bit lacking on bass, unless we have become used to extended bass from modern amplifiers
Amp 2 - A modified iteration of the Quad 405, built by Rick.  This was assembled from boards and components obtained from eBay and is basically a more modern version of the Quad 405 Mk II using modern components.  The amplifier acquitted itself very well and provided a solid sound stage
Amp 3 - Andre brought along two EL34 based monoblock amplifiers.  Despite only having an output of 3 watts, they managed very well but in the very large (16m x 10m) room, ran out of steam
Amp 4 - Our donated Pioneer A209.  It worked, but does not have the clarity of the previous 3 amplifiers

The music (we didn't play all of it, but this is what was available)

1 – Gershwin Prelude no 1 - Charl du Plessis Trio         24 bit 44.1KHz
2 – Maggie Said – Natalie Merchant               24 bit 88.2KHz
3 – Money for Nothing – Dire Straits               DSD 2.8MHz
4 – Groven Undring, Harmonica and Church Organ      DSD 2.8MHz
5 – Don’t Smoke in Bed – Jacintha                DSD 2.8MHz
6 – We’ll never have Manhattan                       24 bit 192KHz
7 – Stolen Car – Sting                     DSD 2.8MHz
8 – Billie Jean – Michael Jackson / Thriller            DSD 2.8MHz
9 – Handel, Organ Concerto in G minor            DSD 2.8MHz
10 – Amamuseum / James Newton Howard (Sheffield Track)   24 bit 88.2KHz
11 – Geminiani – Sonata op 5                  24 bit 96KHz
12 – Vivaldi - Nuovo Stagione , Allegro            24 bit 88.2KHz
13 – Vivaldi – L’Estro Armonica                  24 bit 192KHz
14 – Brahms – String Quartet no 1               DSD 2.8MHz

After tea we ran the competition.  Despite being a multiple choice competition, it proved more difficult to manage.  Some people achieved 6/10
