The folly of listening in a generic environment

So we have an official meeting place. But there's a problem with using such a venue for hi-fi appreciation. Watch this excerpt until about 28:36.

He does go on a bit in that talk.  I pointed out to our committee that in the old days, we used to have the meeting cross-ways in the room.  The staff room is quite large (12.5m x 33m) so when the equipment is at the projector end, you sit as you would in a church, but when you are crossways, the speakers are much closer to the listeners.  Of course very few can be in a "sweet spot" but it is a meeting room, not a hi-fi appreciation room.  Most people's listening rooms cannot accommodate more than 10-12 people at a real squeeze and here we have 20+

There is a music room in the next block that you can have a look at.  Considerably smaller, except that it is nearly square (about 10m x 12m) and has chairs, but there is no kitchen.  Not nearly as comfortable.  We tried it a few times and found the drawback that it was on the first floor, being square it did not sound right and was often full of junk

What else to do?

Thanks for this. I don't want to be a wet blanket; I just don't want us to have unrealistic expectations.

The quality of sound in that room is inversely proportional to the cost.  In other words, the law of diminishing returns applies more readily in a large room, as the equipment has to work harder to be appreciated.  You will of course heard of Murphy's law.  I have been attending meetings in this room since 1995, when the Computer Club started using it as their venue.  It is amazing to find that equipment, that works 100% when at home or in a shop, suddenly starts misbehaving or not working properly when set up there.  Not every time but noticeable.

Once a dealer brought an amp and speakers along, hooked it up and put on a record.  No sound.  He and I fiddled for 15 mins checking everything.  Eventually I took out the speaker fuses.  Both had blown.  Who knows why?  He was most careful attaching the cables which had banana plugs fitted

Cassie is the manager at Audio Vision Tyger Valley, as shown on their website,  Actually, the fellow from AV in Century City, Jannie, will be hosting the meeting, although at AV's Tyger Valley shop

Dunno what I will be interested in at AV...not into HT at all and sort of not interested in the units and brands and level of stuff they carry- tho I am looking for a large screen TV.... do we hifi club members get a discount?
Hopefully we dont have to sit thru an hour or more sales schpiel...
I will be there however , no matter what... got to get value from my R100 :)

@ Rodney

I walked past the AV store in cAnal Walk on Saturday and noticed a lovely Thorens TD 2035(TD 2015) in the window. First time I've noticed a more than decent deck at AV. Maybe they've realised that the market for HiFi could be commercially viable for them.

And yes, some sort of sales pitch is expected

Rodney, bring your plastic.  Jannie did offer discount on the night to hi-fi club members, but I've no idea of the percentage.  Non-members will qualify if they pay the treasurer their subs on the spot and thereby join.  No entry examination is required

Gents

I was assured there will be no heavy sales talk- everything will be very informal. The emphasis is on enjoying the outing and simply networking with another.
