Re: A big THANK YOU to all our donors
« Reply #1395 on: June 16, 2018, 04:52:35 PM »
During the last few months, the club has been very fortunate to receive some excellent and useful donations, from participants of this forum

We don't want your gifts to us to go unrecognised, so a big thank you to:

Waldman, for a pair of Rogers LS/3A large bookshelf speakers.  These have already produced most satisfying sound at our June house meeting

thenoizeguy for the donation of a Shure V88 stereo microphone.  This is something we have been after for some time, and seeing we have talented members who are adept on musical imstruments, we want to record them, if not for posterity, but as a learning exercise

Waldman (again) for a Rotel speaker switch box.  Since many of our meetings involve switching from one component to another, this will enable us to do it cleanly and easily, instead of fumbling around on the floor

Thanks Chris for your kind words and I’m glad the kit is getting some proper use. Cheers guys.

Five of us visited Ramsey Raad (Audiotweak) in Capri Village on a wet and windy Cape Town Saturday afternoon.  Ramsey not only treated us to lunch, but let us listen to his much improved system, not so much different equipment (I don't think there was anything new) but some minor alterations (low-gain valves on the Lampizator DAC) and general tweaks

A stunning track was "Walking On The Moon" by the Yuri Honing Trio, from their album "Star Tracks".  Amazing clarity, depth of field and presence.  Audio has certainly matured listening to the selection of music

A very firm Thank You to Ramsey for providing a superlative listening session

Looking forward to the Head-Fi gig.  >>  :groovy:

Hopefully will be better attended  - although those who miss out on these events truely do.

The Afrikaaners have a wonderful saying: Jammer oor jou    k  :cr@p: k   te hoor.

I guess the english equivalent would be : You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink

Either way folks are missing out, - though it is squarely their loss.

Our meeting at Jacques' emporium, The Turntable Guy, in Durban Road was very well attended.  A most interesting shop, with many audio items from the past on display, plus some of Rega's latest turntables

Jacques went over the many improvements that have been made to the design and construction of Rega glass platter turntables from their heyday up to the mid-1980's until the vinyl resurgence today which has enabled Rega to spend more time and effort into improving the build of their flagship products today

A big thank you to Jacques for hosting this meeting, which was most interesting and a great success

iNTERESTING AND ENJOYABLE EVENING. tHERE IS STILL A LOT TO BE SAID FOR VINYL AND NOT ONLY AT STRATOSPHERIC PRICES OF SOME OF THE NEW HARDWARE OFFERINGS (SORRY CAPS LOCK ON AND NO TIME TO RETYPE). Rega stuff (TT's, amps and phono stages) gave a really good account of themselves as did the other favourites like the Linn LP12 coupled to a Mission Cyrus.

Thanks Jacques and all who attended for the interaction - for the record (no pun intended) KK (Kent Kassler) was there too and you know what that means: wow but no flutter due to extra tolerences and machining techniques for the bearings

We had another home visit to Ramsey (of Audiotweak fame).  He has replaced the Golden Dragon valves in the ZOTL 40 Mk 2 power amplifier

Any trace of muddied bass had totally disappeared.  Every note was perfectly articulated and precise.

We listened to a variety of recordings, ranging from Rimsky-Korsakov to the Beatles.  A well-worth visit.  Thank you Ramsey

A visit to an audiophile

Tucked away in a most interesting house in Newlands, in the forest with a stream at the bottom of the garden, is this dedicated audiophile who has applied many gadgets and exotic cables to augment the listening experience

We saw for the first time, a CD trimming machine which planes less than 1mm off the edge of a CD, making it accurately circular and cuts off the trim at a 45 deg angle.  You then apply an optical sealer to this fresh edge

What looked most interesting but we were unable to try it, were a set of gold ribbon interconnect which came in a solid box with an attractive gold material inlay

Top row, left to right:   The equipment rack.  A Manley DAC.  A Jungson Class A integrated amplifier
Middle row:  Speakers with ribbon tweeters.  A Statmat.   The CD edge trimmer
Next row:  Some cable lifters.   The box with the gold ribbon cables.   The lid of the box
Bottom:  Some silver mains cables which possibly might be offered for sale at some stage

The sound - very good voice and imaging,  The bass was not extended, due to the small boxes, but was adequate

Our fifth Speaker Shootout took place this morning in the Board Room at the NGK in Plumstead

Equipment to hand included the club's music server, a Devialet DAC/amp, the club's Marantz amp, our new speaker selector switch which enabled several speakers to be wired at once, thereby saving time connecting and disconneting

People who brought speakers were Brian Bester (his new Unsquares with a tweeter enclosed in a 3D printed small enclosure, his blue boxes, Jozua's ribbons, Andrew's reconed Missions, Stefans 2.1 way column speaker

The levels were measured using a calibrated microphone with a pink noise tone to make sure each speaker was played at an equal volume.  We spent a good 3 hours listening to a selection of music, with a break for tea and doughnuts and pizzas at lunchtime

Brian's modified Unsquares were voted the best by far

Sorry boys, if the tests weren't blind the results aren't valid.
(Just kidding, of course).

Are those the same Unsquares, simply with an added tweeter, that I listened to at Francois' home at the DIY showcase? I was enthralled by them that day. I recall them being a smaller two way. If these are an entirely new version is there a build thread that I missed?

I would enjoy attending events like these. Ones where you actually listen in the same space, to the same music at the same level whilst changing a single component.
