I came across the following article: http://www.heraldscotland.com/business/corporate-sme/how-close-were-we-to-going-bust-one-hates-to-speculate-really-close-1.1041935

This bit got me thinking:

"He soon realised that the company had a major weakness. For all its expertise in hi-fi's, it had no answer to the internet age. Gilad duly initiated the ?Volkano Strategy?, a ?2m investment which laid the foundations to build the digital streamer (DS) device.

?It was a complete revision of our engineering processes,? he says. ?It took about four years before the Linn DS was ready.?

The move did not make Tiefenbrun universally popular. Some boardroom voices believed that the company would have been better buying in other people?s streamers. Numerous managers ended up leaving over the disagreement. When the product was finally ready, it was no less traumatic persuading Linn suppliers in places like Japan that the sound quality was better than a CD."

If you were to create the ultimate media player/streamer and you had access to $3 million in development capital would you buy into an existing eco-system (lets say Android for arguments sake) or would you start from scratch?
