DIY noobs, where do you start ?

This question is as much for me as I would imagine it would be for a few others. Where would someone with little electronics knowledge (myself included) begin if they were interested in a DIY project. I might be interested in an amplifier. I studied electrical engineereing (one year) and don't remember much but I do have soldering and DIY ability. I don't necessarily want to design the whole thing from scratch but maybe some form of kit. Are such kits commercially available or are you guys (Martin, Chip, etc) going to do one of these as well. This is just a thread starter, we can hammer out specifics as we go along.
