There have been a few posts here relating to car audio, so I thought I'd enlighten some forumites about how sound quality is judged in competitions.

Firstly in SQ comps it's NOT about how loud you can play.

Secondly you dont get to play your own music, a dedicated reference CD is used.

This CD has tracks on it from amongst others Telarc and sheffield, so recording quality is good.

There are technical tracks to test for left/right, and phase, and music selections that are used to look at overall spectral balance, imaging and staging.

Liner notes from the CD talk about the recording environment and stage maps are provided that show where artists/instruments were when the recording was made.

As far as judging goes, either the instrument are in their correct location or they're not, either the car sounds good or it doesn't

While this is an over simplification, it does give an idea about what judges look for in a SQ car.
