Just done a repair on a Marantz 5200 which had an erratic volume control as it does not get used much due to the remote being more handy.
You need to remove the facia to get to the pc board screwed onto the inside of it.
this involves unplugging all the connections ( take photos with your phone before you start ) and removing 2 top screws and 6 underneath.
Remove all the screws from the pcb on the facia and remove the vol knob and lock nut.
Unclip the pcb from the facia and turn it around to expose the vol control.
Prise open the 4 clamps on the volume control ( no parts inside to fall out ) .
Clean the grease off the contacts on the shaft section with an earbud (repeat with a few buds)
Carefully clean the feelers on the mounted part and gently bend them up a tiny bit.
The grease on the shaft which gives the vol an expensive feel works its way onto the contacts which causes all the trouble.
Refit and enjoy a perfect vol control that cost you an earbud or 2 and a bit of time.
