2.5way sounds crappy
« on: December 05, 2008, 10:30:49 AM »
OK so the inductors are about the right size now, very little bump in everything except Janis Ian's voice, all other vocals are cool, the FR is fairly smooth to the ears and the speakers don't sound like bookshelves with a bit of whallop below 250 Hz anymore... they sound like the fairly large speakers they are... but the midrange is just not what it was. I had hoped the 6dB/octave on the one woofer would be fairly inaudible, but I suspect it is muddling up the midrange quite a bit.

Any thoughts? re: the cause? too big resistance in coil (0.3 Ohm), or is it just plain what you gain on the swings you lose on the merry go round? In retrospect I could have wound a MUCH smaller inductor into the active pre... higher resistance (2.5 ohm), but would it matter in that large resistance environment?

Active X-O at 2k 24dB/octave a la http://www.thel-audioworld.de/module/saw/saw.htm

Previously I had a 24dB/octave .5 way at 250Hz, which helped a little but couldn't give the nice gradual decline needed for BSC, but it didn't stuff up the midrange above that so much.. ::).

OK! I've had it! I don't give anymore Kharma. Kharma should work in mysterious ways...

I don't suppose you can post an FR graph?

P.S. I just checked out another recording and it seems to have a bump around 400Hz... so I should have gone bigger on inductors... where can i find a core allenkeys sound crappy...

 ;D ;D ;D

Maybe we should take a few steps back here...

To be super truthfull, you should go through the whole shlep of doing a raw response curve, then tweaking the passives in a simulator then only wind the coils. C'mon, you know this stuff ;) :D

The offer stands that I've made to other members, you welcome to my measurement jig if you need it. We need to meet up soon anyway so I can get that CDP to you.

Uhm welllll.... you know.... ::)  I thought they'd have higher values and then I could just unwind to correct a little...

Gert thanks, maybe I should run through to you to pick up stuff excluding the measurement rig, so's you have less things to move... don't really know how to work it, and I am off to holiday on the 13th... till jan can't put the wife through a year of start-up business and not do holiday... You need stuff from Electronics 123 while I'm running through? am 3 blocks away... prolly next week have meeting in Centurion on thursday will stop by your office around noon?

Hehe, but I'm in Benoni? I'm also off after next week. Let's chat and see when we can get together before that.

This might sound silly, but lower the .5-way x-over point.

I agree Norval, have been pondering it a little and they should sit around 350Hz according to the Edge calculator, but a friend convinced me even 600 were not too high... so I put it at around 450... Hope the second solder joint doesn't sound too ****... ;D

BTW, I plonked in some pieces of roundbar... in the centre of the coil, of unknown steel type... and it does smooth things over, not sure how it sounds yet, will listen for a while before I decide...
