How to: PVR - mobile media.
« on: January 28, 2013, 11:24:14 AM »

Hello AV Junkies.

Anyone know if this be possible?

Have PVR'd sporting type program: and now first prize would be to transfer to DVD/CD/Thumbdrive for 3rd party business viewing exclusively.

Any ideas?

If by PVR you mean DSTV PVR, then no your content is locked to that device.

If by PVR you mean rolled your own with MCE or XBMC, then all your content should be accessible to do with what you like.

The direct/easy way (but not the highest quality)  is to play the program on the PVR and route it via analogue video and audio - through a Macrovision stripper - to a DVD recorder with composite input. (or a computer with analogue video input).

Maintaining original broadcast quality is a mission indeed - doing it the 'digital way'.

The analogue output on the DSTV PVR doesn't have any copy protection on it. You can strip the copy protection form the HDMI stream with an HDFury.

Don't these posts contradict one another?

Yes and no.

If you've recorded the stuff on the DSTV PVR then it inaccessible.

If you've recorded onto another device using a HDFury to strip the HDCP then you can access it.

I suppose it would be possible to playback recorded content on the DSTV PVR and pass the output via the HDFury to your capturing device.

Let's see if I have this:

HDFury is a hardware device?

Basically you'd record onto your pvr, and then in playback, you would go via the HDFury to another device? Your computer, perhaps?

Yes. It converts hdmi to component and optical which you run into a capture card. You can then build your own PVR with MCE, XBMC, media portal etc.

That's very interesting.

So with HDFury and some cables and software....you're cooking on gas!

Building a PVR adds up cost wise and there is some work to do to get it setup, but it is possible to break out of the monochoice sandbox.

Yes it does. It's the Macrovision system.

Then maybe it depends on the decoder? We have it setup here at the office to stream TV to multiple TV's using Media Portal and I didn't have to do anything fancy other than plugging it into the Colossus and setup the stream.

We have one of these:

Most likely this colossus thing doesn't recognise Macrovision. Home recorders like DVD recorders & video tape recorders will not record the CVBS output of a DSTV PVR (without Macrovision removal).

My experience with Macrovision in the good old VHS days was scrambled or off colours on the receiving side.

But anyway, much of a muchness. Point is you can record the SD stuff on a PVR using a Hauppauge colossus without any other bits in between.
