You've all read advertising from the lunatic fringe about PMPO rated outputs...

We've probably all also determined that PMPO - as an acronym - stands for "Peak Music Power Output", but maybe its time we started to examine some of the common characteristics of devices rated in this way...

To assist in this thought process, here is one of those "senseless and irrelevant pictures" that have suddenly become anathema on this forum (according to some):

poweraudio3an.jpg

Commonalities:

a) The casework consists predominantly of polystyrene plastic sourced from recycled Revell model aircraft kits
b) The main power transformer of a device with a claimed PMPO output of 4,000watts is the same size as a poker dice
c) More than 70% of the transformer output is used to drive the 354,457 LEDs that festoon the front panel
d) There are zero discrete components on the motherboard (which is also made from recycled model aircraft)
e) The internal wiring used would have inadequate power handling if used as tonearm wiring for an MC cartridge
f) The brochures all feature words like "Advanced Hyper Bass", "Ultra-High Output Power" and similar bullsh*t
g) These same brochures have simultaneously debased terms like "High Fidelity" and "Audiophile Quality"
h) Complete systems of this genre typically cost less than a half-decent 1.0m analog interconnect

:and, places like Hoi-Foi Erection with their extremely knowledgeable sales force are just waiting to pounce on the unitiated buyers...

Ag shame!
