5v regulated power supply

Hi All,

Seeing as we've got some gurus on here can someone please give some advice.

I want to build my Raspberry Pi a cheap regulated power supply.  I got the prices from communica, and this works out nice and cheap, and i can make a nice fancy case for it.

I've got the follow circuits:

I understand that the second one takes some load off the regulator and that it does better smoothing, but also wastes more energy? (do we care?)

What do the guru's suggest for this?

*Edit:  The cheapest Transformer I can get is a 15v 1Amp transformer.  I want to be able to get 5v 1amp from this circuit.
