Here is an easy test for a soundstage: Play a simple "girl with a guitar" song like Melody Gardot's Baby I'm a Fool and if you can hear the girl's voice on both speakers, and not in the centre only, chances are that the soundstage is compromised. You should be able to hear and point to the voice somewhere between the speakers, depending on seating position and balance setting. With the majority of systems I've heard, the voice comes from both speakers. That's not natural and not the way the song was recorded. On my system, I don't hear the voice on the speakers at all. The voice should come from the 3D holographical representation of the stage between the speakers. That's what soundstage is about. An out of phase speaker connection will also have the same no-soundstage effect.
