Remember coupling, decoupling ? Most of us think about this in terms of resonance control : damping, vibration control, etc... To add to above conversations I would like add - coupling of the speakers to the room. Once the speakers 'couple' to the room, most of the terms/aspirations noted above, become easier to identify and/or pursue. I mean couple in the most positive subjective and objective way possible, once achieved, the music will fall into place much easier. Examples : Generally speaking, a mini monitor is great for imaging (and soundstaging), but lacks room filling bass. A floorstander can have overblown bass. Adding the right subwoofer/bass to the mini-monitor, will couple them to the room better, and both the imaging and soundstaging benefits more once the room is energized correctly. It should make all those other sound related things we desire, easier to identify and achieve. Same goes for the floorstanders - couple it to the right room/space and the same applies. The above is a simple analogy. Once you see it working you will understand and appreciate it.
