Very often I just connect and enjoy the sound for a while . Rating depends on how long I enjoy the sound. The usual suspects are brightness , floppy bass, unnatural timbre that tire me despite the initial excitement. On a serious note certain criteria are essential. 1. Relaxed natural sound which does exist even in dynamic systems. 2. Accuracy as opposed to coloration . Many people prefer the opposite . 3.True and proportionate across the frequency range. 4. Low noise floor. Detail at low volume . 5. Emotive aspect. This is beguiling. Many systems have this but for a short time only or just for a few audiophile recordings. If the above 4 attributes fail across a few tracks I’m done. 6. Most importantly the system must sound good with simple Red Book CDs or inexpensive vinyl. Caveat: I strongly believe musical enjoyment is a product of the acoustic space, power supply/delivery , isolation/anti vibration , speaker positioning etc etc etc.
