Unfortunately people buy 1st with their eyes and then with their ears. Same with super cars like Ferrari or Lamborghini. Few buy them for their ultimate speed. There are way faster cars around. They buy them for their visual and sensual appeal. What they think they get. Why do guys open the bonnet if it is not important how the engine looks? Heck, they even design the engine to look appealing. Even the way the car's door close, that sound the door makes? They have spend a great deal of time and money making a pleasant thud, a sound we instantly associate with quality. They design them that way. The speed without the looks will not get them over the line... Clever manufacturers makes use of a visual designer to design the "look" of their gear. These designers look at gear visually from a consumers point of view, they study that field. Like the internal design of a great amp takes skill, so does the visual outward design. Gear needs to be visually integrated from the 1st product to the last product. Few manufacturers have the ability to do both. Hence they realize the advantage of employing an outside company to design their overall look, a trade mark they can carry with confidence. There are DIY stuff out there which out performs a lot of expensive high end. Why dont people buy it? It looks like DIY, "the perceived value" in the eye of beholder is low. lots of gear on the market is low quality but looks like a million dollars. And it sells, a lot since the seller did their home work and realize the buyer bought into "Perception." The companies that do great are the ones getting a couple of these facets right from the word go. A great internal design needs a great outward design otherwise it will prove to be most difficult to move ahead. Times are changing fast due to the internet. People research the gear and look for improvement. Setting up a theme for components if often far easier than what manufactures realize. For a couple of grand they can often great an identity that lasts a lifetime and beyond.
