I have Kef's (Q7,Q1,Q9c) and their off axis performance is sublime. The Uni-Q does what they say it does. I will never knock another speaker but I demoed a few and had the same experiences you've had. Other speakers have gerater bass output, which some people think is a weakness of the kef's (it isnt) but the kefs deliver a brilliant soundstage and the best mid-range (Q7) I've heard this side of R20k. Listened to Sonus Faber Grand pianos and still preferred my kefs. You can demo them at Audiovision in Canal Walk. They had them there in July when I was in the Cape. My opinion........save up for the kef's but do demo first. BTW they have a new series (iQ) coming out, I know I'm trading my Q7's when they come out :D Edit: BTW the kef's are not what you'd call 'laid back' speakers, their soundstage is very much forward and the sound VERY tightly controlled and some people may not like that. The Q7's are great for stereo as well
