Steve: I read your report from 2020 with a major sense of deja vu! Anyway, I can now report that the Sony and Denon AVR are, once again, cooperating. So, what did I do? Nothing, yes folks, nothing. I switched everything off at the wall, as I usually do when I shut down at night. Next morning, switched on and activated the Sony in order to, once again, fiddle with settings and lo and behold (or should I say, behear), sound track was playing as if nothing was ever the matter. Steve, I've made a note of all input settings on my AVR and on the Sony, if you need these to perhaps relook at your Sony.
