Very interesting question Stefan. I guess this will be different for many, but this is how it works for me: I belong to two groups, one primarily focused on music and the other on the equipment. 1) Me and a group of friends have been getting together for the past 10 years on a regular basis to spin records over pizza and beer. Our primary focus is the music and the social element. Of that group of approximately 10 friends, I am the only one with a high fidelity system. Most of them have very dodgy sound systems, but they know more about music than me and many. I think a key part is that there is a pretty big overlap in music taste among us. 2) Then there is the group of Hifi friends where the focus is more on the equipment than the music. Music still plays an important part, but here we discuss the equipment and related industry news. I have always been a gear head, whether it is hifi, photography, wine glasses, running gear etc, so this group satisfies the equipment part of this hobby. At home, my wife fully gets and supports my hifi hobby and we love listening together, although not as much as I would like. She has a better ear than me so I enjoy getting her insights as well. In fact, she is the one who said I should buy the Holo DAC I had on demo because of the significant sonic improvement. Home is also where I listen in solitude as a way to escape and relax.
