Well, If I had to replace my equipment at todays prices , I would be looking at about 3x the cost of the 892 cds I own - based on an average of R100 a cd , but if I look at what I paid for some of my stuff (Pound = R4 ) than Im about even. I dunno if the value of music exceeding equipment should be the arbiter - at 3000 cds , even if you listened to 3 a day it would take 3 yrs to get thru it all. In my mind , the value is the pleasure I get listening........kinda like my cars , I have a gas guzzling 7.4 litre el camino ---i drive it daily and get 3km/l at BEST - its a totally impractical city car but its worth it for me for the odd occasion I get to floor it at a robot and smoke the tyres or to humiliate drivers in cars 10x the price in a dice - and for all the looks and thumbs up I get when i drive it and of course the rumble and screaming bellow of a big block v8 (better than any hifi) Having said that , im in the process of buying a honda jazz - the more sensible option :)
