For sure it is not the only important attribute, firstly you need enough power to avoid clipping (especially with SS amps), then you look at everything else.  SE designs are at the other extreme of the scale for those who like 2nd harmonic distortion. ;D

With the right power supplies and amplifier design it is quite possible to get very close at least.  Unfortunately what you say is true in many instances.

Just listen and compare an amp that can deliver high current with one that can't and we will see who eat that salt.  :D To me an amplifier with a high dynamic power (short term) rating just confirm the poor quality of the power supply.
