    Pass Labs INT25

Curiosity kills the wallet... my journey into madnes and bliss. It started with curiosity. Building a DIY F5 I decided to audition Pass Labs amps to see how they sound. I wanted to listen to the INT25, since its based on the XA25 and the reviews indicated this would be closer to my taste. I...

    Moving funds abroad. Advice needed

My work permit is not being renewed and expires Dec 2023. Looking into moving my funds abroad as I return I have come to realise I need professional help because SARS doesn't make it easy to do this myself. I am looking for advice on reliable tax/accountancy professionals in Sandton who can...

    Preamplifier

This. For your stereo setup, move the Denon out of the chain. I moved from an A/V receiver to pure stereo. For a time I used the receiver connected to the speakers, then receiver to power amp to speakers. In the end the best result I got was by getting rid of the receiver. With a stereo setup I...

Using a Raspberry Pi as a media centre/streamer

Thanks. I have the Shield Pro. Just in the habit of referring to it as a Shield. I'll first try hooking up my hard drive to it, then see if I want to upgrade.

Using a Raspberry Pi as a media centre/streamer

I was thinking of getting a Raspberry Pi and use it as a NAS+media server/streamer. I have a Nvidia Shield connected to my TV and am wondering where or if the Raspberry Pi would fit in the setup. I want to keep the Shield since I have Netflix, Prime, etc. already setup on it. The thought was...

    Speakers and space

If you decide to switch to a 3.1 setup (front, centre and sub), then getting the surround effect will depend on your room setup. You would need to recalibrate the receiver for the new setup. Soundbars will not sound as good as speakers but some can really sound good and may be good enough. You...

    tv series

I haven't watched Wheel of Time. The first season got good reviews. How is the second shaping up? Giving what went down with GoT I am wary of treading into something that derails my joy from reading the books.

    tv series

With today's technology I don't think there are technical issues in bringing Asimov's vision to life in video. I think the difficulty is economic and an attempt to make the story palatable to a wider audience, losing some of its essence in the process.

What do you wish you knew when you started this journey?

    1) Trust your ears. If it sounds good to you, keep it. Doesn't matter if it didn't review all that well. Sometimes you end up wth the sweetspot of equipment combination where the whole is better than the parts. I gave up on quite a few things which in hindsight sounded really good. 2)...

    Room size vs speaker

Check out the Spendor A2. They are 76cm tall, 15 wide and 25 deep. They are compact but have big sound. Their bass is also good, I know since I auditioned them using rock music.

Does your family, loved ones and close friends get your passion for hifi, sound and music?

Nah. My wife likes her music but is fine with the bog standard tv speakers! She thinks I spend too much on audio. And more than the "variety" of equipment its the number of wires that seem to bug her more. Always on my case to keep the amount of equipment and wires to the minimum. I was at one...

How many of you like the sound system in your car?

That's been my experience. More than the price of the equipment, what matters is how well its setup to mix with the listening environment it's set in. My second car was a Ford compact car. But somehow the system installed in it matched it really well. It was just the stock OEM system, nothing...

How many of you like the sound system in your car?

I love mine. I lucked out as the used car I got had a Meridian system which sounds great. Topped up by being tuned to the car space and the ability to go really really loud because of the cars sound treatment makes it the car a great place to listen to music. I have a really awesome system at...

What do you wish you knew when you started this journey?

1 & 4. I live by them now and will die by them. I tried 3, quickly learned 4 after that.

Best free player for FLAC files

When I was on Windows I used Foobar2000. On Mac I found Vox and didn't need anything else. Now I am on Linux, and have settled on Strawberry Player or cmus. I've found that any app that uses ffmpeg under the hood performs really well.

Internet Radio Stations - Who else listens to them?

Thanks for this. I use a tuner for local FM radio, but love to try out radio stations from around the world. When I travel tuning into local stations is something I enjoy. This site is great for doing this virtually. Love its interface.

How did you start your "Hi-Fi" Journey?

Mine started by chance. And instead of musical gear I first got hooked on home theater systems. I was accompanying a friend who wanted to get himself a Bose HT system and was going to its showroom for an audition. For a first time experience it was ok. Next to the Bose showroom was a high-end...

Recommendation on portable battery power station or portable generator

I got the Mac Afric 1.8KW sine wave generator after another round of load-shedding and breakdown, leading to a day without electricity. And suddenly my neighborhood has been blessed to be without load shedding! I am assuming the repairs for the breakdown implemented some sort of bypass which...

Recommendation on portable battery power station or portable generator

Currently with Stage 5/6 I am enduring 12-14hrs of loadshedding in a 24hr window. Yay. And praying no breakdowns happen due to the intermittent loads. fingers hard crossed. I was looking at portable battery power stations -...
