Almost. As I remember it you swiched the zone on which would play music in that zone. You then switched on the intercom function which made the speaker in that zone work as a microphone. To speak to that zone you held down a talk button.

We had one of these when I was a kid - not sure of it was a pilot one though. If I remember rightly it just used the remote speakers as the microphones. Their state was determined by the mode of the radiogram (eg: Radio mode meant that the speakers functioned  as remote speakers and then...

Sounds like the turntable input is set for a crystal pickup. There's a small switch next to the input - make sure it is on the L settng.
