Can You Hear the Difference Between a Cheap and Expensive Violin?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtlTJkbUqkA Double blind test using professional musicians, who often preferred the modern instruments to the old ones. The "superiority" of the older instruments is sadly more romance than anything else. Not sure I have a problem with that. Same with pianos...

    LP12 motor replacement

I'll give that a whirl, thanks.

    LP12 motor replacement

Hehehe... Thank you for the advice and perspective.

    LP12 motor replacement

Understood, yes. I suppose even if no difference would be readily audible to me (not impossible), I would get the material satisfaction of knowing the hardware is "better". And yes sentimentality plays a part, as the unit was given to me as a gift many years ago. This audio business can be so...

    LP12 motor replacement

Thank you for the replies, and upgrading to a newer unit is of course normally worth considering. That said, having had time with a fairly modern LP12 with lots of bells and whistles (correctly setup), I failed to hear anything that would make me want to spend a tidy sum on a similar setup...

    LP12 motor replacement

Hi My old LP12 (serial 2228) has the original PSU (with big red neon power button) and motor (MB01with big red neon power button). I was looking at a Hercules upgrade, but need a newer motor as well (old MB01 model fitted, and dated 1973). What are my options for replacing the motor? Would a...

QUAD II (old old stock): Alternatives to KT66?

Just some info for others reading this, I have some Gold Lion KT66's in my II's (purchased when the exchange rate was quite a bit more favourable). One was DOA and the vendor shipped out a new one free of charge. They get used for many hours at a time almost every evening for around 18 months...

    Quad II output transformer rewinding

Hello Yes, I am the same Maestro you know, I shipped my amps to you for a rebuild :-) Right now I'm in deepest darkest Africa, but normally I reside in Cape Town. When I say the one transformer runs noticeably hotter, it is not "hot" by any means, just warmer than the other one when you rest...

    Quad II output transformer rewinding

Hi No, all 4 KT66's have the same glow on both amps. The grey part I think you are referring to stays grey.

    Quad ESL57 rebuild

Thanks Mine will require panels to be rebuilt though (conductive coatings restored, dust covers replaced, etc), and not simply panel replacement. Would you know if he offers this service? I will be contacting Donovan as well.

    Quad II output transformer rewinding

Hi One of my Quad II's had an output transformer that was rewound locally. The other II has the original one. The original one runs noticeably hotter, and now recently, after extended listening sessions, it starts buzzing audibly (sounds like a short), although it still plays sound without any...

    Quad ESL57 rebuild

Hi I have a pair of old ESL57's which I adore, and the time has come for a rebuild, I think. When I bought them they had NOS treble panels in, and I replaced the HT supplies with ones from ESL Labs in the Netherlands. These include LED's to show panel leakage, and they show that all my panels...

    Quad II trouble

Just an update to this. I sent the amps to AmpDog, and many weeks later, no definitive fault could be found. All the components were replaced internally (some resistances were out by as much as 60%), and the amps seem to be running without issues now. So here's holding thumbs. The balance on...

Thanks for that, Mr Snook and I have exchanged many emails already, and I have bought him plenty of beer!

    Quad II trouble

Considering that the transformer outputting 6.7VAC to the heaters is also leaking a bit of tar and running noticeably warmer than the other one, I'd say it's probably toast  :flame:

    Quad II trouble

Slight error, I was measuring each of the heater pins to chassis earth, due to not understanding clearly how to measure them. On the amp eating valves I measure 6.7VAC across pin 2 and 7, and on the other amp 6.3VAC.

    Quad II trouble

OK, from the top: The leakages on the KT66s were all tested, and all found to be excellent. On pin 1 of the EF86s I measured the following after warmup: Hungry amp: V1=105.1V, V2=89.3V. Normal amp: V1=109.5V, V2=99.3V None of the resistors have been renewed, as earlier in the thread you said...

    Quad II trouble

OK, some new results. On the "hungry" amp I read C2 as 97V and C3 as 153V. The other side of these is about 200mV, and g2 is 336V. On the heater pin 7 I measure 4.1VAC. L1 is 336V and 340V on either side, respectively. The anode on V1 is 98V, and on V1 it is 153V. On the other amp, C2 measures...

    Quad II trouble

My apologies, I was measuring the wrong pin  :BWAHAHAH: On the one amp I measure 790K and 760K on V1 and V2 respectively, and on the other amp 800K and 700K on V1 and V2 respectively.

    Quad II trouble

Many, many thanks to Karel Mars and his acquaintance Pieter, who tested my collection of vacuum tubes for me. Ampdog, I can say with certainty now that I have 4x EF86s that are 100%, and 10x KT66s that are 100%. My 2x GZ32s are a bit "low", but I have 2x GZ34s which are perfect, and I have...
