Serial number should be on a sticker on the outside of the box and on a sticker visible when you remove the earpads.

The colour of the membrane surrounding the drivers will give you an indication of age: http://www.musicprogressive.com/images/HD600_comparison.jpg Black is the older version, white the revision. Maybe you could also email sennheiser the serial number to check the manufacturing date?
