You say not intended for HE speakers.  Would not be a matter of lowering the damping factor for HE speakers.  I am sure this is possible by tuning the feedback and output impedance of the amp.  This is actually quite an interesting subject when you start to look.  Nelson Pass speaks about it...

Jim Gore build one of these into his ceiling and used a vent not unlike yours to vent into the room.  Look back for this on the forum.  He later build another sub that replaced it.  This subject makes very interesting reading. Happy hunting.
