EL84/6BQ5 consequences of repurposing pin1 "spare" socket-pin position

Original data sheets usually designate such pins as " I c" (= internal connection), which means it may or may not be attached to anything, but should not be regarded as floating and not available for tag-strip use.

What was the last Film you watched?

John Waters' "Pink Flamingoes". It's been on my list to watch since VHS was the only format, finally I watched it this week. Intersting, although the general degeneration of TV makes it completely unshocking compared to typical modern material. But 1970s audiences were understandably appalled.

Opinions on vintage CD players (circa 1989/90, top of the line)

    Analogue Vs Digital

This strongly suggests both your records are in poor condition and your cassette recorder is faulty.

    Very interesting

Strictly speaking a mono signal would produce only vertical modulation of the groove. However the record industry adopted a convention of inverting the phase of one channel so that mono does indeed become horizontal motion/modulation only, because this is far easier for the stylus to track than...

What is the best speaker connection?

Not pretty and possibly a little impractical, but electrically you won't easily do better than this:

Monitoring incoming Voltage at DB Board

The formal specification is 230V +/- 10%, so any voltage from 207 Vrms to 253 Vrms is "normal" and not a fault condition. You shouldn't expect it to be 230 or 240. You are also not allowed in the distribution board unless you have the appropriate license - abilities and education mean nothing...

    1984 from novel to fact

Other than occasional internet (which I've had from home since 1986, so I'm not entirely luddite) I use not one of the items in that list.

    1984 from novel to fact

I think you're a bit premature. "The machine stops" is more a short story than a book, but a very good read, beautiful language too - which you don't find so often in recent publications.

Black CD - What is this ?

As Dacman said, the playback light is 760nm, just on the near infrared/visible wavelength boundary. The visible colour of the plastic can be very different to its infrared transparency. They can make the disc look almost any colour they want without affecting functionality. I have discs of...
