Thank you for your replies. There is nothing obviously wrong with the cartridge. But it is old. Should I use it?

I have an old Linn K9 cartridge and was told by a HiFi sales person that the rubber suspension becomes harder with age and can cause damage to the record grooves. Is this correct, or is this just salesmanship?
