So a HDD died in one of my older home PCs. (MB is an oldish AMD K8-based board).

I then bought a new 1 TB Samsung drive, HD103SI. It doesn't matter whether I try this drive in the PC above or another (newer) Intel DQ965GF board (with 6 SATA ports), it is not detected by the BIOS and the machine simply hangs at POST.

In desperation I brought the drive to work and tested it in a Dell GX280 - it works fine and passes the Samsung diag utility's tests.

Both the other boards have the latest available version of their BIOS, and the Intel board presently runs 500 and 320 GB SATA drives without issue.

What could be causing the other boards not to detect the drive? Is it possibly too big?
