Last two - now spoken for.

there is a waiting list with a couple of names - but I doubt that anybody will default.

Rudi,

There's sure to be a national shortage of RAM and HDDs in the coming days..... ;D

Do you (or anybody else) have an idea as to the quietest HDDs to go for ?   Are 5400 RPM quieter than 7200 ?

Tx again for your contribution.

So far the quietest and coolest HDD's I've come across are the Samsung F4 2TB jobbies. I have run one in my Mede8er for a while now and it never gets hot.

They can be had for around R800/850 each

Nope, hence the F4 part of my sentence. The rest of their drives are rubbish although their products have improved dramatically over the last few years. Having said that anything can fail. I run a rather large datacentre and we have disks fail all the time. The most common failure I've had over the last 2 months is 600GB 7200 RPM 6GBPS SAS disks made by Seagate and running in Dell R510's so I guess it can happen to anyone anywhere anytime.

Been using Samsung F4 drives since they came out and haven't had a single failure but hey, who am I to speak. I only have 15 years experience in the business:p

I hear you, but once bitten twice shy.  I had a terrible experience with Samsung HDDs (both laptop & pc variety) a few years ago and I'll never, ever buy a Samsung HDD again.  Drives shouldn't fail in rapid succession within a few months of use, especially when that use is light.

FWIW I have 5x 2TB Seagate 5900RPM drives in my Microserver and it's quiet enough to put in my listening room.
